The African portal on stuttering

Therapies

Several methods of treatment of stuttering exist namely:
• Self therapy
• Consultation with a speech
• The use of an electronic device
• Traditional methods

Before starting therapy you should keep in mind that stuttering may not disappear just in one day. It is an everyday work that could probably take several weeks, months, or years The stuttering is like an iceberg where the visible part (of speech disorder) represents 10% of the total mass of the iceberg and invisible or submerged (irregular breathing, negative perception, shame, guilt, lack of confidence, substitutions words, and so on.) represents 90% of the total mass of the iceberg.

The treatment of stuttering is a serious problem in Africa, because there are very few professionals who treat stuttering and when they do exist they are only found in large cities. In addition there are a few untrained therapists and many charlatans who claim to treat stuttering within a few days. The latter, generally use unconventional methods

Given the lack of trained therapists in Africa and given the lack of training institutions for speech specialist facing most African countries, we recommend self therapy through self help groups. The self help groups allows the various group members to help each other, share their experiences and support each other.
